"Does copying Polymarket whales work? Our data from 2,500+ sports bets"
The most common question about whale trackers: "What if I just copy their bets?" We tested it on our own data. Below are honest numbers as of October 29, 2026 — no cherry-picking.
How we measured
PrognosX picks up large sports bets from the Polymarket blockchain as they happen. We paper-copy every bet from a strong wallet at $10, at the real price we could have gotten, and track it to settlement. One position per outcome — top-ups don't double count.
Results
- Whale bets before kickoff: −3.1% over 2,576 bets.
- Whale bets in-game (live): −8.3% over 3,316 bets.
- Only bets where we paid no more than 1¢ above the whale: −1.6% over 2,071 bets.
That last line matters: even at the whale's own price, the result is negative. Speed isn't the problem — the bets are.
Why
- Size isn't edge. In the week of Oct 22–28, the 100 biggest whale sports bets went 54–46 and still lost 2.3% on $5.8M. One wallet put about $800K on four NFL games in a single Sunday and lost all four.
- The hot hand doesn't last. Wallets with a strong past record often went negative afterwards. A beautiful profit chart doesn't predict the next bet.
- You only see the buy. A whale may sell mid-game or hedge elsewhere. Copying the buy isn't copying the strategy.
What does work
Bets bought cheaper than the closing price (positive CLV) return about +17% in our sample. The catch: you only know that afterwards. So we look for ways to spot those prices in advance — for example, comparing Polymarket with the line at Pinnacle, the sharpest sportsbook.
How to use a whale tracker
- As information: where big money goes, how the line moves, what experienced wallets like.
- Not as a copy button: copying everything is a slow loss.
- Judge a wallet by its long-run record and the price it got, not by bet size.
