"Why bettors use Pinnacle as the benchmark (and how to use it on Polymarket)"

Ask a professional bettor which odds are "right" and the answer is almost always: Pinnacle's. Here's why.

What makes Pinnacle different

  • Low margin. Around 2–3% on major markets, well below most sportsbooks.
  • It doesn't limit winners. Pinnacle takes action from sharp bettors and moves its line on their money. By kickoff, the line already reflects the smartest money in the market.
  • High limits. The price holds up for big bets, not just small ones.

The result: Pinnacle's closing line is one of the most accurate estimates of a game's true probability.

Removing the vig

To get the fair probability, strip out the margin.

  1. Take 1/odds for each side. Both at 1.95: 0.513 + 0.513 = 1.026.
  2. Divide each by the total: 0.513 / 1.026 = 0.50. Each side's fair chance is 50%.

Using it on Polymarket

A Polymarket price is also a probability. If Pinnacle's no-vig line says 55% and Polymarket sells the same outcome at 50¢, it's cheaper on Polymarket than it should be.

One bet guarantees nothing — any single game can go either way. But consistently buying below the fair price is what wins over hundreds of bets. It's the same idea as CLV: buy below where the market prices the outcome by kickoff.

What we see in our data

PrognosX paper-tests a "buy on Polymarket when it's cheaper than Pinnacle" strategy. The sample is still small, so no conclusions yet, but the price after those buys moved our way by kickoff more often than not. Simply copying whale bets shows the opposite.

Limits

  • Pinnacle is wrong sometimes, especially on small markets and far from kickoff.
  • Lines move: compare fresh prices.
  • Polymarket has fees and a bid-ask spread — your edge has to beat both.
