"Can you make money on Polymarket? What 850,000 sports bets show"
"How to make money on Polymarket" is searched more often than "what is Polymarket". Here is the answer in numbers, not slogans. Every figure below comes from our blind test: rules were designed on one set of data and then checked on 856,000 bets nobody had seen in advance.
The headline number
All big sports bets (from $1,000) lose 4.3% per bet on average. Copy every whale and over 100 bets of $10 you lose about $43. Bet size is not edge. The richest wallet of the week can lose four NFL games out of four on a single Sunday.
Where the edge actually is
| Rule | On unseen data | Bets | |---|---|---| | The whale buys below the closing line (CLV > 2¢) | +4.3% | thousands | | Duel: two whales on opposite sides, take the side with CLV 3¢ higher | +3.1% | 1,117 | | Smart whales (score 3+), bet before kick-off | +1.2% | 2,722 | | Late Smart bet within 2 hours of kick-off, football excluded | +3.2% | 530 | | Last hour before kick-off (any whale) | −7.3% | many |
In plain words: the money is not with "whales in general" but with narrow groups — wallets that beat the market (the line later moves their way) and wallets that are strong in one slice: one league, one market type, one time window. One of our "masters" holds +37% on 61 bets in the Champions League only, and is in the red on everything else.
What it means in money
An edge of 3–4% is a good result in betting, but it is not "double the bankroll in a month". With $10 stakes and 10 bets a day the expected profit is about $3–4 a day, with drawdowns of up to a third of the bankroll in a week. Anyone promising a steady +20% a month either has not counted or is lying.
What does not work (we checked)
- Copying every big bet. −4.3%.
- "Whales piling in together". Three wallets on one side: −4%.
- The hot hand. A wallet with a pretty profit chart last month is often in the red next.
- Live and the last hour. The worst bets in the sample.
- Tennis underdog an hour before the match. −3.1%.
How to use this
- Look at the wallet, not the bet size: CLV, a plus in both halves of its history, the slice where it is strong. On a PrognosX wallet card this is one "Copyability" score with reasons.
- Bet a fixed stake ($10) and do not chase. Bankroll management matters more than the pick.
- Keep score of everything, losses included. Ours is public: honest record.
- Remember it is crypto and a grey area in many countries — see Polymarket from restricted countries.
